Why does child care seem  to cost so much?

This question is asked alot. To help parents understand what they are paying for, I find it easier to give a simple breakdown.  There is the cost of food, supplies for the daycare (such as paints, paper,glue,toys,puzzles,etc), materials for staff development and traning, fees to the state and/or town officals, taxes, fees to insurance companys, electric and water usage, payroll, fees for mandatory tranings for staff, background checks,  and so forth. As you can see, child care providers do not simply pocket the fees they charge. The fees are used for upkeep and enhancing your child's learning center. 

What is the difference between a child care center and a family day home?

A child care center is usually licensed to keep a larger amount of children.  They may offer more programs as well. A family day home is usually licensed to keep a smaller amount of children. The children there usually see the same staff every day and parents sometimes prefer the more intimate home like atmosphere. They both strive to ensure children's saftey and development. It simply comes down to a parent's personal choice. Please note, not all family day homes are licensed though. This is something a parent needs to ask. By being licensed, a family day home must meet certain standards set forth by the Va. Dept. of Social Services. 

How do I know if a family day home is for me and my child?

You can go to  www.earlymotherhood.com/checklist-for-family-day-care-homes.html  and print a checklist to take with you to interview family day homes.  You shouldn't be hesitate to ask questions and the provider shouldn't be hesitate to answer.
